Bring Onyewu, Keller back home

Que pasa, bitch

Onyewu using summer to seek for new team

Both “Gooch” and “The Truth” are looking for new clubs and hopefully, MLS coaches, GMs, scouts, trainers, and even water boys are working their fingers raw dialing up and begging the Americans to come home.

There’s really no question that Keller should finish his career stateside, like his pal Claudio Reyna, so it shouldn’t be a tough sell for MLS. Both RSL and Toronto could use a veteran like Keller between the posts, as they have allowed a combined 30 goals in 18 games.

“Gooch” will be the tougher sell because he has only begun to prove himself in Europe, but MLS should beg, borrow and steal to get him, maybe under some type of loan or temporary arrangement. While I think playing in Europe is often beneficial for the development of our young Americans, MLS needs young, American stars to shine here at home, too.

Before there was Clint Dempsey's "Don't Tread on This," there was this:
Kasey Keller

Onyewu is not coming to the MLS.
What a bad idea.

I have to agree, Onyewu needs to be in Europe, both for himself and for the national team. Keller on the other hand I can see coming back to the States. He certainly has the quality to go another year or two in a top euro league, but failing that he should be in the MLS.

So both of you are of the mind that American players are not able to develop in MLS? MLS isn't going to ever get better as a league if we are just Pro-40 players, mediocre colege players and over-the-hill Europeans. Should MLS be just a player mill for Europe, producing players like Beasley and Dempsey and then selling them? That's fine for places like Brazil and Argentina where soccer is the national sport and will sustain interest no matter the level of their domestic league. But in the US we are trying to grow interest in the sport and in the league, so that future Nat stars pick soccer over basketball or football or baseball. Why shouldn't the US go after its own stars, if it is willing to spend the big bucks for guys like Beckham and Angel?

No, I believe players can develop in the MLS and I do believe that the MLS, for its own interest as a business entity, should go after US stars. But let's face it, Europe is where all the best players in the world go because it has the most quality and talent. You don't become the best unless compete day in and day out against the best. I think MLS is coming along nicely developing player, both in higher quality and quantity. But MLS can't hold its top players in US anymore than the Argentine, Brasilian, or even lesser european leagues like those in France, Portugal, or Netherlands can. The top players go to where the top competition is. Sure the MLS can and will try to land more and more talent, but from the perspective of the players and the national team, it is better for them to be in Europe. Hopefully this changes in the future and MLS becomes a top league, and I think we are together on this, but for now it simply isn't the case.

i agree. until the youth development and talent raises in this country i think MLS should grow by developing players and making money off of transfers. hopefully they can stay afloat long enough and create new fans, so that when the overall talent of the US improves the league can step in pay players competitive wages and become one of the world's best.
